consistency

When the boy goes to the adult bookshelf lately, without fail the book he pulls out and presents to you is a paperback copy of The Drowned and the Saved by Primo Levi. It's a mystery why one harrowing Holocaust memoir appeals to him beyond scores of other books of roughly the same size, shape, and design that are just as easily within reach, but he is remarkably constant. Since it's a little disconcerting to imagine what this says about the life he may someday lead, for now I'm just choosing to focus on the consistency of the choice and not its content.
